Prince Edward opens Blackburn Youth Zone

Howell Cummings Catering Equipment Ltd have successfully completed their third Youth Zone Project for OnSide North West. Their fourth youth zone in Oldham will be completed in February 2012.

Youth Zone, a dream that has taken three years to achieve, will be a sports hub for future generations of youngsters in the town.

Prince Edward, addressing scores of Blackburn’s great and good, said the opening represented a historic day which the town ‘would never forget’. He said: “Today is quite an important day for the Queen and the country as it is the anniversary of her accession to the throne. “To be here seeing such great work for the next generation is wonderful. “In the future we will never forget the day Blackburn Youth Zone was opened.”

The £5million centre is based in Jubilee Street near Blackburn railway station.

Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Dunn said: “The most impressive thing is to see just how many people share the same passion as myself for the town and want to help local people. This is a great project.”

Around 300 business and community leaders were taken on tours of the hugely impressive building, which includes an eye-catching roof-top football pitch, sports hall, gym and dance studio.

Dignitaries were treated to dance and musical performances from youngsters in the sports hall. They were from the youth panel, which has helped shape the design and facilities at the centre. There will now be a series of ‘soft openings’ where youngsters will be bussed in from one school at a time to try the centre out ahead of a full opening to the public in a few months’ time.

Yesterday the finishing touches were still being made to the building hours before the royal visit. Painting was being completed in the morning, while a suspended ceiling was installed the previous night.

Peter Little, chief executive, said: “It’s been a long journey from the starting line, but the building is now finished. “Young people desperately need our support and this is a catalyst for that. “We also want to bring the people of Blackburn together to support our youngsters.”

Andrew Graham, chairman of the project, said: “I am incredibly proud. We have used the phrase ‘world class’ a lot. We knew that if we wanted to bring something to Blackburn we had to make sure it was amazing. “It has been an ambitious project but when there are so many people who are on the same journey and working hard for the same goal we have shown what can be achieved. ”

The building is being designed by architects Stride Treglown, and comprises of a 250-seat restaurant, kitchen and cafe in the ‘West Block’ and retail space, currently designed as three units plus a laundrette, in the ‘East Block’.

The development will also include 710 student accommodation units, providing a mix of en-suite study bedrooms, studio apartments, two-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom duplex ‘loft’ apartments.

The student development is being hailed as the most sustainable in the UK and includes features such as a grey water system to provide water for toilet flushing, LED lighting for common areas, air source heat pumps, brown and green roofs, solar-thermal heating and integral natural habitats built into the brick work.

The project is defined into 5 key areas where Howell Cummings Catering Equipment have been commissioned to design, supply and install catering equipment.

Area 1 - The Main Kitchen provides a bespoke back of house kitchen where the majority of preparation and cooking will take place. The design takes into account the proposed building structure and the limitations of floor to ceiling heights relating to coordinating services installations.

Area 2 – The Main Restaurant Servery is constructed in an Oval counter configuration, constructed adjacent to the main ground floor kitchen. This area is designed to cope with the busy University and Student requirements of a 250 seat restaurant preparing and serving throughout a busy daily schedule. This area also includes a separate cooking display area.

Area 3 – The Main Wash Area has been designed with the latest appliance technology alongside a DDA compliant motorised Hi-Lo Tray Racking collection facility servicing the busy dish wash facility.

Area 4 – A bespoke Cafe Area provides a separate refreshment facility to the main restaurant on the ground floor level

Area 5 – Mezzanine Level – Hospitality Servery, designed for catering, as a specialist facility, for University conferencing, hospitality and corporate events.

Howell Cummings Catering Equipment have worked closely alongside Ocon Construction to develop, design and coordinate the installation which is due to commence in February 2012.

The project has started on site and is due for completion in June 2012, ready for summer delegates and the new intake of students for the 2012/2013 academic year.
